Creating a WOW Kitchen – Storage Space, Gourmet Cooking & Island with Seating

Our clients for this project were a younger professional couple with two small children and a dog.  They came to us with the challenge of creating a WOW looking space that blended with the décor of their home. Their top three criteria were more storage space, a gourmet cooking, and an island with seating – all were equally important.

The challenge was incorporating the island with additional seating and storage given the existing entry and access ways to the area.  This was achieved by removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen and installing French doors to the exterior patio, which required some surgery to the exterior wall, etc.
The end result was a unified space with beautiful custom features.

Custom Features

We worked with Anne Foulke, a local artist, to hand build a very unique tile back splash featuring three architectural plaques that were created by pressing the clay for the tiles into the relief of old architectural carvings.

We recommended the Holiday Kitchens Elite cabinetry line for its overall value and ability to provide custom details. The finish was chosen based on a studio display they viewed at one of our design review meetings. The Cherry wood/ Destin finish with mocha glaze featuring minor distressing utilizing the Georgian door design was chosen for the main portion or perimeter section of the kitchen. The island was Cherry with a coffee bean finish featuring the Harrisburg Door design – a perfect complement to accent the look.

Also incorporated into the cabinetry was a custom pullout dog dish that was engineered into the toe kick of the kitchen cabinetry.

Other products used in the kitchen:

  • A Wolf range, my recommendation based on personal experience and cooking performance.
  • A Euro Cast limestone hood. HomeTech Renovations is an exclusive distributor of these hoods in the Philadelphia area, and we can custom stain and finish them to match décor.
  • A U-Line beverage cooler and a Sharp microwave drawer were chosen for the island – both achieved a look and degree of efficiency within the design.

The End Result

In the end we delivered a WOW custom space that was family and dog friendly, through real value-based products and engineering considerations. We preserved the existing wood floor through a custom blending of newly purchased hardwood. Walls were removed, new French Exterior doors were added, and a handmade one of a kind backsplash was installed. The ultimate goal was achieved – a happy client!
